6 PHI KAPPA PHI FORUM
Mississippi University for Women chapter (076) has a simple, yet effective, way to
connect with students who are either invited to Phi Kappa Phi or hope to be invited. It
hosts a Phi Kappa Phi Day in the fall to increase awareness of the Society on campus
and in the community. Those invited include underclassmen from the Honors College
and those on the president’s and dean’s lists, international students, and faculty/staff
members who wish to learn more about Phi Kappa Phi.
The chapter hosts a chili dinner with discussions of how to become a member, what
membership means, scholarship availability, and how to apply. President Dorothy
Berglund gives a bit of history about the event:
“We wanted (Phi Kappa Phi) to be a little more student-centered, and because
we knew of students who were invited but who did not join because they did not
know what (Phi Kappa Phi) was. We also wanted to highlight the community service
inherent in the Society’s mission through this event. We have a large contingent of
Nepalese students on campus, and for our first event in 2015, an international student
from Nepal discussed conditions there. She was one of the only ones who returned to
her home country after the massive earthquake that hit the region in 2015. She helped
guide us to appropriate agencies/organizations for donations, given the situation on the
ground in Nepal.”
This emphasis on community service is a thread that continues through the event
every year, and the visibility of the chapter is highlighted throughout the campus and
community because of this one event.
